Guest lecture “The Relationship of Sport to Global Development: A Critical Sociological Analysis” (Prof. Richard Giulianotti, Loughborough University)

This lecture provides a critical sociological analysis of the relationships between sport and global development with specific regard to the ‘sport for development and peace’ (SDP) sector. After defining SDP, and noting its main aspects, I move to discuss the role of the United Nations, notably with regard to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I then briefly explore the positive and negative aspects of development that tend to be highlighted by social scientists before setting out different types of approach to global development that may be pursued, and their implications for SDP policy and practice. Finally, I set out a variety of specific development challenges that are faced by the global SDP sector, and how the sector may respond.
