Dr Iuliia Eremenko, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, recently participated in the XIX Biennial International Association for the Study of the Commons Conference. The conference, titled “The Commons We Want: Between Historical Legacies and Future Collective Actions,” was held from June 19 to 24, 2023, in a hybrid format.
Dr Eremenko’s expertise was showcased on June 20 during the session “Cultural Heritage as a Commons: Governance Challenges through the lens of UNESCO Heritage Conventions and the Sustainable Development Goals.” Co-chaired by Peter Gould from the University of Indiana and Hanna Schreiber from the University of Warsaw, the session brought together experts in the field to explore the intricate relationship between cultural heritage and effective governance.
In her presentation, Dr Eremenko shared her research paper entitled “Local Experts in World Heritage Cities: Understanding Their Role in Polycentric Governance. The Experience of Torun.” The study, conducted as part of the grant “Local experts in Polish and German World Heritage Cities: understanding their role in polycentric governance of heritage sites” (project 2021/43/P/HS5/02926), received co-funding from the National Science Centre and the European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 945339.
Dr Eremenko’s thought-provoking presentation sparked a lively discussion among online presenters and attendees who were physically present at the University of Nairobi. Hanna Schreiber facilitated the exchange, providing a platform for an engaging discourse on the topic.
