Report from the 70th anniversary celebration of Prof. Dariusz Popławski

The celebration of Prof. Dariusz Popławski’s 70th birthday took place on November 20, 2025, in the historic interiors of the Tyszkiewicz-Potocki Palace (Warsaw University Museum). The meeting brought together university and faculty authorities, colleagues, students, and friends of the Professor, providing an opportunity to honor his many years of contribution to the development of international relations studies.

The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wiesław Lizak and Prof. Joanna Starzyk-Sulejewska, who welcomed the guests and introduced the event.

The official part consisted of congratulatory speeches, during which the Professor’s scientific achievements, his commitment to teaching, and his role in shaping the academic environment of the University of Warsaw were highlighted. Speeches were given by:

• Prof. Maciej Raś (Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Quality of Education),
• Prof. Katarzyna Kołodziejczyk (Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw),
• Prof. Jakub Zajączkowski (Chair of the Scientific Council of the International Relations Discipline, Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw),
• Prof. Edward Haliżak (Chair of the Polish Society for International Studies).

During the speeches, the achievements of Prof. Dariusz Popławski, as an outstanding researcher of international relations, Polish foreign policy, and Austrian issues were recalled. There were also personal memories and wishes expressed by the numerous guests who attended.

Prof. Dariusz Popławski has been associated with the University of Warsaw for decades and is an undisputed authority in the field of international relations and the foreign policy of German-speaking countries. His research interests focus on issues related to Austrian foreign policy, the status of neutrality in international relations, and Polish foreign policy. His works, including key monographs on Polish-Austrian relations, constitute a fundamental contribution to the understanding of political processes in Central Europe.

As a valued teacher and mentor to successive generations of researchers, Professor Popławski has played a key role in the development of the Warsaw school of international relations. His publications are considered canonical works in the field, serving as a source of knowledge for both students and experts in the history of diplomacy and contemporary international relations.
