From 17–19 October, we welcomed students from the European University Viadrina from Frankfurt (Oder) to our Faculty who—together with students from WNPiSM UW—began developing outlines of joint international research projects dedicated to analysing the causes of the far right’s rising popularity among young voters. We discussed the theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundations of this research, as well as the latest findings on the youth and gender gaps in support for the far right.
Participants emphasised that there is no single explanation for rising youth support: it is a complex, multi-level phenomenon on the demand and supply sides, in which voter perceptions matter as much as “objective” data. In the Polish–German perspective, contextual differences come to the fore (including the gender gap, party-specific features).
Equally important was the integration of students from both universities and the exchange of views and experiences.
The second, concluding workshop will be held in Frankfurt (Oder) and Berlin at the beginning of December.
The project is co-financed by the Foundation for Polish-German cooperation.
