Study Visit of Faculty Researchers to Southeast Asia under the NCN OPUS Grant

From 31 January to 8 February, Dr. hab. Jakub Zajączkowski, Dr. hab. Dorota Heidrich, and Dr. Saroj K. Aryal carried out a study visit to Southeast Asia as part of the research project funded by the OPUS programme of the Polish National Science Centre (NCN), entitled “The Responses of Emerging Global South Powers to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine and the Consequences for International Order.

During the visit, the researchers conducted a series of seminars, expert meetings, and consultations with representatives of academic communities, think tanks, public institutions, diplomatic circles, and the media.

The programme included, among others, meetings with:

  • Dr. Dino Patti Djalal, former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and Chairman of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia;
  • Prof. Dewi Fortuna Anwar, Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN);
  • scholars from the Department of International Relations at the University of Indonesia;
  • researchers from BINUS University;
  • analysts from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

The discussions focused on the role of Global South states in the transforming international order, the perception of the war in Ukraine among policymakers and public opinion, relations between the European Union and the United States and emerging powers, as well as the challenges of cooperation in an increasingly fragmented and competitive international environment.

The team presented preliminary findings of the project and delivered workshops for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students devoted to contemporary geopolitical complexity and the future of international cooperation.

The visit marked another stage in the implementation of the project. Previously, the researchers conducted field research and participated in academic conferences in Latin America, where they also presented initial research results.

The OPUS grant is implemented by an international research consortium with partners from several continents. Regular project meetings are also held at the University of Warsaw, strengthening cooperation and enabling in-depth comparative analysis.

We would like to sincerely thank all our partners for the inspiring discussions and their commitment to advancing international academic cooperation!
