Conference description

Year 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the beginning of major political, social, economic and cultural changes behind the Iron Curtain. Since that day different forms, models, and spheres of both transformaation and transition in Central-Eastern Europe have been reasearched by many academics from perspective of social sciences and humanities. But the open question remains: what is the general balance of successes and failures of last 30 years of changes in the former Eastern Bloc?

Welcome lecture will be held by prof. Elzbieta Matynia. She is Professor of Sociology and Liberal Studies, and founding director of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (TCDS) at the New School for Social Research in New York. Her research in political and cultural sociology focuses on democracy and its challenges, gender and democratic projects, and the public sphere. In both her research and teaching she explores the arts as a site of social reflection and knowledge.
