In the second half of 2023 the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies (FPSIS), University of Warsaw strengthened cooperation with universities from Sri Lanka. During the study visit to Sri Lanka on September 9-15, 2023, of professor Dorota Heidrich, Dean’s Representative for the Development of Programmes in English, and professorJakub Zajączkowski, Dean’s Representative for International Research Projects and International Cooperation, meetings with academics, students, representatives of the authorities of two Sri Lankan universities were held: the University of Colombo and the University of Jaffna.
FIPSIS has been cooperating with the University of Colombo (UC) since 2019, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the FPSIS and the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Arts, UC. During the study visit in September 2023, professor Dorota Heidrich and professorJakub Zajączkowski discussed strengthening research cooperation, including joint research projects, and student exchange with the Vice Chancellor of University of Colombo (Rector), professor H.D. Karunaratne; the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, professor L. Manawadu; the Director of the Department of International Relations, professor Chaminda Padmakumara; professor Manisha Wanasinghe-Pasqual from the Department of International Relations, as well as with Ms. Sashika Manoratne, the Head of the UC Office of Foreign Relations. During the meetings with the UC representatives, it was decided to sign a cooperation agreement and a student exchange agreement between the FPSIS and the Department of International Relations, UC which is currently being processed. Meeting with the UC authorities and researchers from the Department of International Relations, UC joint research and teaching initiatives for next academic year were planned (joint seminars, lectures, publications). Bilateral cooperation in the area of doctoral programmes was also discussed.
In addition, FPSIS members took an active part in the scientific conference organized by the University of Colombo INCoRe 2023″Geopolitics of Regionalism” (September 9-10, 2023). During the conference, professor Zajączkowski presented a paper on “The War in Ukraine- Implication and Consequences for the Global South”, and professor Heidrich – on “The War in Ukraine and it legal consequences for the Liberal International Order”.

During the visit to the University of Jaffna (UJ), professor Dorota Heidrich and professor Jakub Zajączkowski met with the Vice-Chancellor (Rector), professor Sivakolundu Srisatkunarajah, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, professor S. Raguram and the Director of the Department of Political Science, professor K.T. Ganeshalingam. During discussions with UJ representatives, it was agreed to sign a cooperation agreement and a student exchange agreement between the FPSIS and the Department of Political Science, UJ, which is currently being processed. Seminars with academics and students were held. Professor Zajaczkowski presented a paper on The War in Ukraine and it Implication to the Indo-Pacific Region”, and professor Heidrich – on ‘The processes of Transitional Justice’.
During the visit to Sri Lanka, faculty members also met with analysts from Sri Lanka’s premier international relations research center – The Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute (LKI) of International Relations and Strategic Studies.
