DEPARTMENT OF STRATEGIC STUDIES AND INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

Research areas:

The department’s area of interest consists of processes, phenomena, relations, and events which create the international security environment. We pay special attention to the probability of wars, conflicts, and other situations of the use of force as well as non-military forms of violence in international relations. The policy of great powers as well as state and non-state actors willing to use force is also the subject of research and analysis. Legal and institutional conditions for security and the use or prohibition of the use of force are an important part of this area of research. This also applies to arms reduction and control. We pay more and more attention to non-military aspects of security, especially to energy and climate ones. A concurrent area of research is Polish foreign and security policy, including the geopolitical conditions of the Polish and European security. As the name of the department denotes (the name was an effect of the transformation of the department of strategic studies existing since the beginning of the 1990s), the heart of the department’s identity is the reflection on the strategy, the scope of strategic studies, and security studies as well as their place in the science of international relations and more broadly also in science about politics.

Institutional cooperation

The base of the Department’s institutional cooperation is the Consortium of Academic Institutions of Strategic (and Security) Studies, established in 2017 by the then Department of Strategic Studies together with units from the Jagiellonian University and Adam Mickiewicz University. The main areas of interest of the Consortium include in particular the analysis of the role of the military factor (and other forms of confrontation) in the process of the evolution of the international order and the effectiveness of institutional instruments for maintaining international security. Annual meetings in the form of plenary conferences and numerous ad hoc events – debates, discussions, and seminars are organized by the Consortium. It also serves as a forum for the exchange of information on the research activity of the involved entities.

The Department also cooperates with the Krzysztof Skubiszewski Foundation, organizing, inter alia, annual scientific symposia, a competition for the best master’s thesis on Polish foreign policy as well as publishing initiatives (such as the collective publication “Krzysztof Skubiszewski’s Heritage in the Foreign Policy of the Republic of Poland” from 2020).

The employees of the Department individually cooperate with public life institutions, are members of the program councils of foundations and associations, perform advisory functions (e.g. in the Senate of the Republic of Poland), and prepare expert opinions ordered by such institutions.
