Seminar The Place of Area Studies in the International Relations Discipline

On behalf of the Department of Area and Global Studies of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw, we invite you to the seminar The Place of Area Studies in the International Relations Discipline. The event is co-organized with the Department of Political Science of the South Asia Institute of the Heidelberg University.

This seminar explores why Area Studies hold an important place in the discipline of International Relations. Three leading scholars will offer their reflections on the genealogy of Area Studies, the application of IR theories to Area Studies and the relationship between International Political Economy and Area Studies. There will be ample opportunity for participants to engage with the presenters on those themes as well as on other aspects of the changing place of Area Studies in the discipline of International Relations.

Professor Edward Haliżak  – President of Polish Association for International Studies, professor at Department of Area and Global Studies, Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw, 1990-2014 director  of International Relations Institute. He was visiting scholars at the academic institutions in USA, Ken State University 1985, Pittsburg University 1994, University of California-San Diego-1997. International experiences is manifested by participation in prestigious conferences such as: Salzburg Seminar, Convention of Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, EAST-West Centre (New York), International Studies Association, International Political Studies Association. The academic work includes the various forms of activity as well such as: PhD Seminars-promoted 28 PhD students, MA Seminars, Lectures and seminars in subjects: International Relations in Asia  and Pacific Region, International trade system, Common trade politic of EU, International finance, Political economy of international relations. The quintessence of research activity taken by professor Edward Haliżak are chapters in classic academic book co-edited with professor Roman Kuźniar: “International Relations. Origin. Structure. Dynamics”, The University of Warsaw, Warsaw 2005. As far as his research interests are concerned, it is indispensable to focus also the role of the theoretical issues that touch the spheres of political and economic connections in international relations. Prof. Andrew Hurrell is Montague Burton Professor of International Relations at Oxford University and a Fellow of Balliol College.  He holds an Einstein Visiting Fellowship in Berlin, and is a Senior Fellow with the Berlin KFG project on ‘The International Rule of Law: Rise or Decline?’ He was elected to the British Academy in 2011. His research interests cover theories of international relations; theories of global governance; the history of thought on international relations; the international relations of the developing and post-colonial world with particular reference to Brazil and Latin America. Prof. Rahul Mukherji is Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science, at the South Asia Institute in Heidelberg University. He is currently the Executive Director of the South Asia Institute. Professor Mukherji teaches and researches in the area of South Asian politics, political economy and international relations with focus on institutions. He has taught at the National University of Singapore, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), Hunter College (New York) and the University of Vermont (Burlington). He is also a Senior Non-Resident Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies (National University of Singapore), and co-chair of the China-India workshop at Fudan University in Shanghai. Professor Mukherji serves on the board of prestigious journals such as India Review, Pacific Affairs, and Governance and co-edits a book series titled: Institutions and Development in South Asia with Oxford University Press. He has co-authored India Since 1980 (Cambridge University Press, 2011, Portuguese translation 2014), with Professor Sumit Ganguly, and has also written Political Economy of Reforms in India (Oxford University Press, 2014), and Globalization and Deregulation: Ideas, Interests and Institutional Change in India (Oxford University Press, 2014). Professor Mukherji’s recent publications include ‘Policy Paradigms and Path Dependence: The Endogenous Roots of Institutional Displacement and Drift in India’ in the Global Public Policy and Governance (2021), ‘Governing India: Evolution of Programmatic Welfare in Andhra Pradesh,’ in the Studies in Indian Politics (2020), and ‘Democracy vs. Covid: India’s Illiberal Remedy’ in the Journal of Democracy (2020).

Prof. Jakub Zajączkowski
