On August 20, 2024, Our Faculty hosted the first day of the 13th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research, themed “Cultural Policies in Democratic and Nondemocratic Regimes.”

This conference, one of the most significant scholarly events in the field of cultural policy research, serves as a crucial platform for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from around the world to exchange views, research findings, and best practices.

The event not only brings together experts in cultural policy analysis but also creates space for interdisciplinary discussions on the role of culture in shaping public, social, and international policies. By emphasizing the importance of cultural policy in the face of contemporary global challenges, the conference examines its impact on various aspects of social life across different political systems. Participants explore how cultural policies can support the development of civil society in democratic regimes and how culture can be used for propaganda or control purposes in authoritarian systems. In doing so, the conference contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between culture and power, while highlighting the vital role of culture in building bridges between different nations and communities worldwide.

The first day of the conference featured 25 panel discussions, gathering experts on various aspects of cultural policy. Before the panel sessions began, the official opening of the conference took place in the Auditorium Maximum. The ceremony was attended by Professor Daniel Przastek, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw; Prof.  Maciej Gdula, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education; Marta Cienkowska, Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage; Joanna Stachyra, Deputy Director of the Department of Public and Cultural Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Aldona Machnowska-Góra, Deputy Mayor of Warsaw, along with Artur Jóźwik, Director of the Bureau of Culture; and representatives of cultural institutions collaborating with us in organising the conference.
