EU Solidarity Talks: Kapuscinski series

The event is part of the EU Solidarity Talks: Kapuscinski series, a pilot series of live, recorded conversations hosted at universities across Europe. The aim is to give students direct access to professionals working on humanitarian and crisis-response operations, and to offer a chance to ask questions about careers, field work and decision-making in high-pressure EU and international contexts.

This panel will focus on Poland’s role in European crisis management, with perspectives from EU institutions, national responders, academia and humanitarian organisations.

The discussion will be moderated by Marcin Żyła, an experienced journalist and co-creator of the acclaimed podcast Raport o stanie świata, known for its in-depth coverage of global affairs and international politics.”

Discussion themes include:

  • Poland’s involvement in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM)
  • The distinction between EU humanitarian aid and EU civil protection
  • Crisis preparedness and response at EU and national level
  • Lessons learned from recent field operations
  • The contribution of research and academic expertise to preparedness and resilience

  • Karolina Moycho, Emergency Response Officer, Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), European Commission (DG ECHO)
  • Jacek Szczypiorski, firefighter, UCPM-trained expert, participant in the EU response following the earthquake in Turkey
  • Jowanka Jakubek-Lalik, PhD, University of Warsaw, specialising in Poland’s crisis-management framework from an institutional and practical perspective
  • Zofia Kwolek, Board Member and Chair of External Relations, Polish Centre for International Aid (PCPM)

The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with students, which will take place off the record to encourage open exchange
