DEPARTMENT OF EASTERN STUDIES

Research areas:

The establishment of the Department of Eastern Studies in 2019 was possible thanks to the scientific potential and achievements of the Faculty’s employees in the field of Eastern Studies, carried out at the dissolved institutes – Institute of International Relations, Institute of Political Science, and Institute of European Studies. The Department continues political science research, conducted so far mainly within the Research Center for Eastern Studies of the Institute of Political Science and the Interinstitutional Laboratory for Research on Russia and the Post-Soviet States. Research is also conducted on the political transformation, leadership and political elites, ethnopolitics, geopolitics, international relations, foreign and security policy of Central Asia and the Caucasus, Russia, Belarus, and other post-Soviet states. In addition to the regions listed above, eastern studies within the department also include Central Europe and the Balkans.

  1. Political, socio-economic, and cultural transformations in the post-Soviet countries.
  2. Leadership and power elites in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
  3. Ethnopolitics, nationalism, and nation-building processes in the post-Soviet regions and in the Balkans.
  4. The international identity of the Balkans and the countries of Eastern and Central Europe.
  5. Geopolitical rivalry in the post-Soviet region and in the Balkans.
  6. Eastern policy of Poland.
  7. Russia in the international system.
  8. Security problems in the post-Soviet region and in the Balkans.

National cooperation:

The Department’s research and scientific achievements have been developed in cooperation with polish universities and research centers in the form of conferences, seminars, and joint publications. Projects and events organized by the Department’s employees were attended by the researchers from the Jagiellonian University, University of Łódź, University of Gdańsk, M. Kopernik University in Toruń, Maria Skłodowskiej-Curie University in Lublin, the University of Wrocław, the University of Białystok and the Polish Academy of Sciences.
