On 26 May 2021, the Department of Regional and Global Studies of the Faculty of Social Science and International Studies (WNPiSM) hosted a seminar entitled the End of Anglo-America? Implications for International Order.

The keynote speaker was Professor Barry Buzan (member of the British Academy, Professor Emeritus at the London School of Economics and Political Science). The discussants were Professor Dr hab. Edward Haliżak and Dr hab. Dorota Heidrich, who also moderated the entire meeting. About 90 persons participated in the seminar: researchers from the Faculty of Social Science and International Relations of the University of Warsaw, from other academic centers in Poland (including Wrocław, Łódź, Lublin, Gdynia, Szczecin, Katowice, Kraków) and from around the world (from Germany, the Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Bangladesh, India, and Mexico). The seminar was also attended by students from the University of Warsaw and other universities, including from India and Ukraine.

During the seminar, Professor Buzan presented his thoughts on a rising China and growing challenges for the international liberal order. His comments focused especially on the fading prospects for continued Anglo-American leadership in international society, based on his forthcoming chapter with Michael Cox (2021) ‘The End of Anglo-America?’ in a book edited by Cornelia Navari and Tonny Brems Knudsen, Power Shifts in English School Perspective. Professors Haliżak and Heidrich, as discussants, further elaborated on the main theses presented by Professor Buzan, before opening up the session to all participants for questions and comments. Together, Professor Buzan’s presentation and the subsequent discussion provided participants with a stimulating debate about the four main questions addressed in the seminar: What does an Anglo-American world mean, and is it still an adequate description of the global order? Are the values promoted by Anglo-America still attractive for the world? What values could today’s Anglo-American world still offer? What obstacles and challenges confront Anglo-America values?
