The development of the IKONA system

The development of the IKONA system (Identification, Collection, and Assessment of Hostile Disinformation Operations in Cyberspace) has been completed. The system’s task is to detect and analyze disinformation on the internet. The tool uses artificial intelligence technologies and big data analysis to monitor content appearing online and identify potentially manipulative messages.

The system analyzes information published on social media and websites, among other platforms. Thanks to its algorithms, it can detect patterns characteristic of disinformation campaigns, identify their sources, and track how false narratives spread. For example, during work on the project, the team identified over 1,600 online accounts that were spreading disinformation in Poland following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Prof. Wiesław Cetera, the project leader, gave an interview to the Polish Press Agency and emphasized that disinformation poses an increasingly serious threat to public debate and social trust. Tools such as IKONA are designed to help respond more quickly to information manipulation and increase society’s resilience to false content online.

Under an agreement with the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR), the Ministry of Digital Affairs has priority in using the IKONA system. However, if the ministry does not utilize the solution, other organizations and businesses may also use IKONA.

Under the agreement signed with the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR), the Ministry of Digital Affairs has priority in using the IKONA system. However, if the ministry does not utilize the solution, other organizations and businesses may also use IKONA. Prof. Cetera would like his team’s solutions to serve as support for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in monitoring the country’s image, for NASK, or for fact-checking organizations.

We warmly congratulate the project leader, Prof. Wiesław Cetera, as well as our team members working on the IKONA system: Dr. Bartłomiej Moszoro, Dr. Dariusz Jaruga, Dr. Wioletta Matosek, and Piotr Celiński, M.Sc.
