The Department of Policy Research Methodology is pleased to invite you to a guest seminar by Prof. Steven Saxonberg from Södertörn University (Sweden).
Title: Can Social Policy Researchers Influence Policy? Personal Experiences as a Member of the Czech Government Committee for Family Reform
Date and venue: Friday, 14 November 2025, 11:30–13:00; Room 114, Old Library Building
In his talk, Prof. Saxonberg will explore whether and how social policy researchers can influence actual policymaking. While most policy researchers study policies from a neutral, analytical perspective, some engage directly in the policy process—as advisors, committee members, or even ministers. Drawing on his experience as the only foreign member of the Czech Government Committee for Family Policy Reform (2015–2017), Prof. Saxonberg will reflect on the challenges and realities of trying to bring academic insights into the world of politics and administration.
The presentation is based on a co-authored article analyzing why the committee’s proposed reform failed, complemented by additional insights into the complex dynamics of policymaking in practice.
All are welcome to attend.
